Brown Bagging for Faux Effect
It's true, you can use ordinary craft brown or red paper to make an interesting faux effect on walls or ceilings, known as brown bagging.
BrownBagging is a faux technique that creates another variation from using the hand-crafted torn papers. Brown Bagging can primarily be achieved in two colors - red or brown, but depending on the amount of primer and paste used different effects can be achieved.
This technique is incredibly easy and affordable, whether you decide to do it yourself or have a professional install it for you.
Using the right materials to get the desired effect is important though. It's not necessary to save up all your lunch bags for a year either. You can purchase brown paper in large rolls. Bonnye recommends:
Standard Contractor's Paper. Finish Factor brand, available in large rolls at most Lowe's Home Improvement Centers.
Distributed by Trimaco, LLC. Item #126347.
Draw-Tite Clear No Run Primer/Sealer. Found at Sherwin Williams stores.
Basically, it is the chemical reaction between the paste and primer which gives the paper its mottled effect.
Brian received additional training in this faux technique from one of the main pioneers in this field - Bonnye Manning from Brown Bag Walls.
